Why? Often neglected, formatting plays a very important role in drafting a professional resume. All your details – i.e. personal information, objectives, interests, etc. can go in vain if not formatted properly.

To Do: Line up all the bullet points neatly; especially important details like dates, headings, certifications, and so on. Arrange them in a logical as well as visually pleasing way so that all the details are clear just at a glance.

Do Not: Place the details in a haywire manner so that your CV looks absurd. Using too many formatting tools, to add a ‘childish’ appeal and make your prospective employer think twice before hiring you!

Choice of Words

Why? Some words give your prospective employer a more specific idea that you had been actively involved in projects or have a healthier work experience. 

To Do: Incorporate more concrete words like “designed website”, “wrote article”, “developed code”, etc. Look out for more such dynamic words.

Do Not: Go for Words like “worked on”, “contributed to”, “assisted” and so on. They are some of the words that not only convey unsurety but also fail to emphasize on your achievements.

Mention Dates

Why? Representing your educational journey and professional achievements through timeline enhances your CV. The dates make your profile look more powerful and appealing.

To Do: It’s good to quantify everything that you’ve done – i.e. from your educational qualifications, college assignments, to the last employer you’ve worked with. Just keep mentioning the dates and milestones.

Do Not: Go overboard with the timeline, as in mentioning dates for every other deed can have negative impacts on your resume.

Keep it shorter, sweeter

Why? Simply because no one likes to go through a very very long CV! Neither do your prospective employer has all the time nor are they interested in flipping pages to understand you.

To Do: Explain everything that you need to, in quite short and sweet way. That means, consider a CEO’s resume, it won’t include phrases like “attended meetings”, “checked reports”, or “planned for the next quarter”. Instead, it would just say “ran a company”.

Why? Customizing your resume for every other job application is a great idea. Apart from helping you advertise yourself better, customization also gives a favorable impression of you on your prospective employer.

To Do: Go about highlighting top 4-5 things you’ve done in relevance with the job requirements. Like for instance, if you’re appearing for a marketing job interview, mention points related to that domain.

Do Not: Customize to the extent of mentioning irrelevant or false information about your educational qualifications or work history.

Spell check

Why? Because the biggest and the last mistake you’d want to do is include spelling errors in your resume. Don’t forget, your resume can make or break things for you. Hence, be completely sure that it does not feature any typos whatsoever.

To Do: If need be, get your CV verified, checked, and cross-checked by multiple persons before facing the interview. Check every sentence twice for any typos. Even a minute spelling error can keep you away from a golden job opportunity.

Do Not: Use complicated words or phrases in your resume, unless you’re very sure of their spellings.

Importance of Hobbies/ Interests

Why? This section happens to be one of the most liked by the candidate, and most looked forward to by the prospective employer. After all, it is the hobbies and interests part which connects both candidate and prospective employer in an unofficial way.

To Do: Nevermind if you’re a pro adventurer, avid bookworm, or an ardent moviegoer, mention all your likes, dislikes, hobbies, and interests on your CV. Let your interviewer know how dynamic you can be in the outside world!

Do Not: Again, state dreamy hobbies and interests just to “impress” your recruiter. Well you never know, the person on the other side might share similar interests as you’ve falsely mentioned, ruining up things for you.
